The Royal Oak Cottage is situated in the very heart of Exmoor, and could not be better placed in terms of access to a wide variety of country and sporting activities.

For the less energetic, the stunning landscapes and uninterrupted peace and quiet make Exmoor the perfect place to take a relaxing break.

Walking

Exmoor provides mile upon mile of open country and sign posted tracks directly from the cottage. Local beauty spots include the ancient clapper bridge at Tarr Steps, the medieval bridge at Landacre and the stunning iron age fort, Cowe Castle You can expect to see herds of magnificent red deer, and also Exmoor ponies which frequently graze on Withypool Common.

Riding

The combination of open moorland and steep wooded valleys make for perfect riding country. The owners of The Royal Oak Cottage Susannah and Steve Downey live at Waterhouse Farm on the edge of Withypool.

Philip and Heather who run the livery yard can provide fit, quality horses for experienced riders. Hacking can be accompanied or unaccompanied.

They can also supply hunter hirelings for guests who want to take advantage of some of the finest hunting grounds in the world.

Shooting

Clay pigeon shooting is available nearby throughout the year, and there are many local
game shoots in season. We would be happy to put you in contact with them or their agents.

Fishing

Sea, river and still water fishing are available locally.
